Sir,
My name is Cpl. Caraballo and I am currently in MCAS Yuma
AZ. The reason for me to write to you is to give you a small
amount of information concerning one of the events that went
on during your cruise. I read your article on our base newspaper.
You comment on one of the waiters whom pointed out the fact
that in the Dominican Republic police officers wear our same
trousers, blood stripe and all. I was born and raised in the
Dominican Republic and what you were told is true. The reason
they wear the same trousers and other articles of our uniform
is because in 1918 the Dominican Republic was invaded by the
United States. This was led by then Colonel Pendleton. His top
priority was to build a police force for the country, this he
did by utilizing his NCOs and junior officers to instruct the
classes of recruits. Having only Marine Corps info at hand that
is what they taught, the same values, traditions, customs and
courtesies and implemented the same uniform. My great grandfather
was in the second class to be graduated by the Americans.
Because of this I also wear my blues uniform at every opportunity
I get. I hope this information was helpful in helping you understand
the respect that my fellow country man rendered you.
Semper Fidelis
