(Thanks to Gunny Hallauer for this great story.)
It was September, 1974 and we were not far from graduation
from MCRD We had just gotten our green service uniforms back
from the tailor shop.
Back then you had a Platoon Commander and two D.I.'s, not
a Senior and two Juniors. Our D.I. was one Sgt Larimer, whose
favorite line was "Bend and thrust 'til your eyeballs fog up!"
I can still see that face in my mind. That night he asked "Who
wants to go to the movies and show off those nice new uniforms?"
Naturally, our reaction was a most emphatic affirmative.
"Be on the street in twenty minutes." Those twenty minutes were
taken up with speculation over what might be in the movie. Maybe....dare
we hope it.....women!?!
No bunch ever felt prouder than we were. We marched down
the grinder to the theater, and responded to Sgt Larimer's "Platoooooon,
HALT!" with a single POP!.
Sgt Larimer stood studying the marquee for a few moments,
turned toward us and said "Aw shit! I've already seen this one!.
TO THE REAR, MARCH!!!"
