“Hey, why don’t all four of us run the Wild Wild West marathon
in May?!” slurred Captain Gary Bash. We were playing our weekly,
Saturday night poker game in his garage and it was late, noted
by all of us being pretty well pickled. In attendence were Major
Phil Patch, Major Brent Norquist, Captain Gary Bash, and yours
truly, 1stLt Jason D. Grose.
“SURE!” came the rousing response from the other three of
the Four Horsemen as we had come to call ourselves. After all,
we all were tough Marines. We were all in good shape. We were
all tempered by long distance running. But most importantly,
we were all drunk!
But we made the commitment. All but one. Major Brent Norquist
was the last hold out and for months, Captain Gary Bash kept
dropping hints and bringing up the topic. What he did not understand
that, like it or not, drunk or not, we had committed and we
were going to run the marathon if for only the reason that we
said we would. He had seen plenty of “back-outers” in his time
but we were not of that caliber. We were fools and we knew it!!!
Only Brent was the forward thinking Marine of the group
and thought we were all nuts. It took only a few months and,
to all of our surprise, he piped in one night as we played poker
that he was in for the run. Now the quartet was complete.
