Well, it was not really a marathon, in the traditional sense, but what is known as a "trail marathon." A trail marathon is just another name for a 26.2 mile endurance course!! This one went through about every kind of terrain that you can think of to include up mountains, through desert, woods, over streams, and even through someone’s backyard. At one point I can remember running on sand through a desert area, sweating like a stuck pig, and looking up to see a snow capped mountain beside me.

This Lone Pine Wild Wild West Marathon, as we were told by Gary, is on the list for the Top Ten hardest marathons in the United States. After running it, I believe it.

The first 5 miles were up a mountain and very little running was done. In fact, 30% of the whole run was walking because of all the steep hills. The longest stretch we ran continuously was 7 miles. It took me 6 hours and 3 minutes to finish and the winning time was 3 hours 41 minutes!! In other words, it was one of the toughest things I have ever done.
